After ten years of planning and dreaming, the Brainerd Lakes Area is about to get something truly special — WonderTrek Childrens Museum is set to open its Outdoor Adventure area in mid-2026!
Built on 9 acres in Baxter, WonderTrek is creating an interactive outdoor play space where children can explore, play, and learn through hands-on experiences. This is not just another playground — it is a place designed to inspire curiosity and foster self-directed learning in kids of all ages.
Project Director Peter Olson recently presented to the Nisswa City Council, sharing the vision: This museum will bring back the opportunity for children to play. And that is something our community has been missing.
WonderTrek mission is simple but powerful: create a space where imagination runs wild, where learning happens naturally through play, and where families can make memories together. Construction broke ground last summer, and the team is working hard to deliver this incredible asset to our community.
When completed, WonderTrek will be a destination attraction — not just for locals, but for families throughout central Minnesota. The museum promises to be a valuable community resource that will serve generations to come.
Learn more: Visit wondertrekmuseum.org or follow their progress on social media.

The United States men’s ice hockey team captured Olympic gold for the first time in 46 years with a heart-stopping 2-1 overtime win over Canada in Milan.
Jack Hughes netted the game-winner just 1:41 into OT, shrugging off an earlier high-stick injury to deliver a moment of pure drama.
Set up by Zach Werenski, Hughes pushed the puck through Canadian goalie Jordan Binnington, sparking wild celebrations among his teammates.
Matt Boldy struck first for Team USA, but Canada’s Cale Makar equalized late in the second period, setting up a tense finish.
Goalie Connor Hellebuyck’s 41 saves proved crucial, especially with Canada missing their injured captain, Sidney Crosby.
This golden moment marks the first time the U.S. has won both men’s and women’s ice hockey gold at the same Games, with President Trump sending swift congratulations.
The electric rivalry thrilled fans and cemented a legacy for this determined American squad.

Cuyler Adams, a determined surveyor, first sensed hidden riches beneath Minnesota’s dense forests when his compass spun mysteriously between Deerwood and Brainerd.
Accompanied by his St. Bernard, Una, Adams uncovered the Cuyuna Range, the name blending parts of their own.
This iron-rich region, stretching 68 miles from Brainerd to Aitkin, blossomed into a major mining hub after operations began in 1911.
Towns such as Crosby, Ironton, and Cuyuna quickly developed as mining boomed, especially with manganese-rich ore fueling steel production during World War I.
The legacy took a tragic turn with the Milford Mine disaster of 1924, Minnesota’s deadliest mining accident, claiming 41 lives.
By 1984, as mining faded, the water-filled pits became the Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area, now beloved for its mountain biking, kayaking, and fishing—preserving the range’s remarkable story for new generations.

I was on the verge of an emotional breakdown—not in a dangerous way, but in that deeply sad, overwhelmed way where you just want to cry and can't stop the tears from coming. You know that feeling? Where the weight of watching someone you love suffer becomes almost too heavy to carry?
Then it happened.
A stranger smiled at me. Just a simple, genuine smile from someone passing by.
And somehow, that changed everything.
FULL ARTICLE HERE ==> https://lakesareabuzz.com/a/when-life-reminds-us-what-really-matters
That smile didn't fix anything. My mother's condition didn't improve. The exhaustion didn't disappear. The profound sadness didn't go away. But in that moment, I felt seen. I felt human. I felt like maybe, just maybe, I could take one more step forward through this heartbreak.
Here's what I realized: you are that person for someone else. Right now, today, someone in our Brainerd Lakes community is barely holding on emotionally. They're fighting battles you can't see. They're one kind gesture away from finding the strength to keep going through their own difficult season.
This week's newsletter looks different because life got hard—really hard. It's probably one of the hardest things I've ever had to do, watching my mother go through this possible decline. I pray she makes a turnaround, but I've also prepared myself to accept that when the good Lord wants to take her, He will. That's what comforts me.
But I need to tell you something important: you are the heroes of this community. Your everyday kindness matters more than you know. That smile, that door you held, that genuine "good morning"—those aren't small acts. They're lifelines for people going through their darkest days.
Please keep Elizabeth in your prayers or send positive vibes. And please, read what I need to share about why this community means everything to me right now.

On chilly January mornings, Waste Partners trucks quietly set out before dawn, ensuring Pine River’s streets stay tidy and organized.
Most residents never glimpse the drivers, but the impact of their precise and diligent work is felt community-wide.
In 2024, the Brainerd Lakes Chamber of Commerce recognized Waste Partners with the Business Excellence Award, highlighting its leadership and deep-rooted commitment to community service.
What began in 1998 as a small recycling venture by Gary and Eric Loge has grown into Pine River’s essential waste and recycling provider.
Adapting to harsh winters, tourism, and population growth, Waste Partners has continually invested in technology and safety, embodying local resilience.
While recent state funding for sustainability didn’t go directly to them, their dedication aligns with Minnesota’s broader environmental goals.

This approach not only meets urgent dental needs but educates kids about oral health’s importance.

Forget everything you know about ice skating. This isn't a flat rink where you circle endlessly in the same predictable loop. This isn't a frozen lake where you're exposed to biting wind with nothing but white space around you. This is something Minnesota has never seen before—and it's happening right here in the Brainerd Lakes area.
Minnesota's first-ever forest ice skating trail opened December 21st at Northland Arboretum, and the response has been nothing short of electric. Nearly 100 people showed up on opening day, and hundreds more have already experienced what one hockey coach called "really exciting"—a winding ribbon of ice that curves through jack pine forest, navigates gentle hills, and creates a skating adventure that feels more like gliding through a winter fairytale than typical recreation.
This isn't just skating. It's terrain skating. The quarter- to half-mile trail features elevation changes that challenge even professional hockey players, with one describing the downhill sections as "more like skiing". Families from San Francisco have made special trips. Local figure skaters are calling it transformational. Social media is exploding with comments like "I'll sign my rights away to everything just to try this".
What makes this trail so groundbreaking? How did a nonprofit executive director who'd never heard of forest skating create Minnesota's pioneering trail with a $1,650 Zamboni from a surplus auction? And why are local businesses saying this could transform winter tourism in the Brainerd Lakes area the way snowmobiling once did?
The complete story includes everything you need to know—operating hours, admission prices (kids under 5 are free!), what to bring, and why this represents a completely new chapter in our region's winter recreation story. Discover why hundreds are calling this the most exciting winter development in recent memory—and how you can experience it yourself this season.

What if the antidote to digital fatigue and rural isolation was already happening in a back room at Jack Pine Brewery—and you just didn't know about it yet?
One Thursday a month, something remarkable unfolds in Brainerd. Strangers become storytellers. Names get drawn from a hat. Seven-minute stories spill out—some funny, some heartbreaking, all achingly real. No scripts. No performance. Just neighbors sharing the kind of truth you can't find scrolling through your phone at 11 PM.
Randy Capelle and Terese Dirks didn't set out to solve loneliness or create the next big community gathering. They just loved NPR's "The Moth Radio Hour" and wondered: could that work here? Turns out, middle Minnesota was hungry for exactly this—a space where a former California lifeguard can share a harrowing ocean rescue, where a mom's heart bursts hearing her child's Boundary Waters story, where a woman rebuilding her life after loss finds healing simply by speaking her truth aloud.
The Commons runs on zero budget, pure volunteer energy, and one radical idea: everyone's story matters. No gatekeepers. No auditions. Your name goes in the hat, and if it's drawn, the stage is yours.
In five events, they've created something that sounds impossibly old-fashioned—genuine face-to-face connection in an age of screens—yet feels urgent and necessary. First-time attendees arrive planning to observe. Then they surprise themselves, putting their name in the hat, stepping up to that small stage.
Because here's what Randy and Terese discovered: when intimacy increases, vulnerability increases. And when vulnerability flows freely in a room where nobody's more than 15 feet from the stage, something shifts. Community stops being an idea and becomes a living, breathing thing.

The United States is preparing to retire the penny after more than two centuries in circulation.
The Common Cents Act of 2026 would end one-cent coin production, responding to rising costs—each penny now costs nearly four times its value to mint.
With over 3 billion pennies made in 2024 alone, the Treasury saw a seigniorage loss of $85.3 million last year.
By ceasing penny minting, officials expect to save about $56 million annually.
Championed by Congressman Robert Garcia and Congresswoman Lisa McClain, the bill introduces rounding for cash payments, while electronic transactions will remain unchanged.
The plan, supported across party lines in Congress, is expected to cause little disruption, with studies showing minimal impact—roughly $6.06 million per year—on consumers.
Retailers nationwide are updating pricing and educating customers to ensure a smooth transition, as the U.S. moves to modernize its currency.

Every once in a while, a story comes along that reminds us what true community looks like. In Central Minnesota, neighbors are stepping up—not just with kind words, but with open hearts and real action—to make sure every person has a place to call home.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) has chosen the buttonhook interchange as its preferred plan to overhaul the Highway 371 and Highway 210 intersection in Baxter.
This design will elevate Highway 371 over both Highway 210 and the BNSF Railway, adding roundabouts to improve traffic flow.
Planning will continue through 2027, with construction set for 2028.
MnDOT stresses this design will boost safety and efficiency, but local business owners and the Brainerd Lakes Chamber of Commerce worry about harder access to Baxter’s commercial hub and possible loss of business.
Public meetings have allowed community members to share feedback and learn more about the project.
As design work moves ahead, MnDOT pledges continued community engagement to address concerns and balance local priorities with improved traffic safety.

Harvest pumpkins and winter squash when their rinds are hard enough to resist a fingernail scratch, signaling proper maturity.
Cut with a sharp knife, leaving 2 to 4 inches of stem attached to help prevent decay in storage.
Always handle gently to avoid bruising and spoilage.
Cure the squash after harvest in a warm, dry spot—80°F to 85°F—for about 10 days.
This step toughens the skin and heals minor damage, creating ideal conditions for longer storage.
Once cured, move squash to a cool, dry location between 50°F and 55°F, with 50% to 70% humidity.
Avoid storing near apples or pears, since their ethylene gas can reduce shelf life.
Check the squash regularly for soft spots or mold, and remove any affected produce right away.
With careful harvesting and storage, your pumpkins and winter squash can last through winter.

Driving with a foggy windshield is more than a nuisance—it poses a real safety risk by impairing visibility.
Fog forms when moist air inside the car meets a colder windshield, leading to dangerous condensation.
Quick fixes include using your defroster or air conditioner to dry out the air and warm the glass.
Opening the windows slightly can also help let humid air escape, rapidly improving clarity.
To prevent fog, keep your windshield clean with an ammonia-based cleaner and consider anti-fog solutions or even household remedies like shaving cream.
Moisture absorbers such as silica gel or cat litter can further reduce interior humidity.
Always check for leaks and maintain your vehicle's HVAC system to keep moisture at bay.
Clear visibility is crucial—these steps help ensure you stay safe, alert, and comfortable while driving.

As autumn colors sweep the Brainerd Lakes Area, local anglers are heading out for prime walleye, bass, and northern pike fishing.
Gull Lake delivers standout walleye action, especially after dark on shallow flats and at dawn along deeper breaks.
Fishing sharp drop-offs near weed beds with live minnows or chubs on Lindy rigs, as well as jigging spoons, can boost catches.
Pelican Lake remains productive—live bait rigs trailing large minnows or nightcrawlers attract fish around structure and weed edges, while spinners or spoons work well as water cools.
Mille Lacs Lake tempts anglers with diverse opportunities: walleyes shift from deep daytime haunts to shallow flats at dusk, and smallmouth bass are aggressive in rocky bays.
Locals report increased walleye activity around 18 to 28 feet on Gull, while bass bite well on various lures in Pelican’s warm shallows.
This fall, experimenting with bait sizes and targeting wind-blown shorelines can make for memorable days.
