Community Mourns the Loss of Beloved Local Theater |
After 17 years of serving the Jenkins community, Sunset Cinema has announced it will permanently close its doors on September 1, 2025.
The theater shared the news via a heartfelt social media post on August 15, stating, "We've had a blast going to the movies with you, Lakes Area, but today we are announcing that Sunset Cinema will be closing permanently after Labor Day weekend. Our last day will be Monday, September 1st."
The announcement prompted an outpouring of emotions from patrons who have cherished the theater as a cornerstone of local entertainment.
Many expressed sadness over losing a venue where they created lasting memories with family and friends.
In a subsequent message, the owners extended their gratitude to the community and highlighted the dedication of their staff, noting that their manager has worked approximately 1,323 consecutive days.
They encouraged moviegoers to show appreciation to the staff during the final weeks.
The closure of Sunset Cinema reflects a broader trend affecting local theaters nationwide.
For instance, in July 2024, Sun-Ray Cinema in Jacksonville, Florida, closed after nearly a century of operation, leaving the community without a beloved cultural hub.
Similarly, in March 2025, Cinelounge Sunset in Hollywood, California, ceased operations, marking the end of a venue known for showcasing independent films.
As Jenkins prepares to bid farewell to Sunset Cinema, residents are left to reflect on the theater's impact and the void its absence will create in the local cultural landscape.
While the future of the space remains uncertain, the memories forged within its walls will undoubtedly endure. |
