Residents Begin Cleanup After EF-1 Tornadoes Uproot Trees and Disrupt Power |
On Monday, June 16, 2025, the Brainerd Lakes area experienced a severe weather event as two EF-1 tornadoes touched down, causing significant damage and power outages across Cass and Crow Wing counties.
The first tornado originated near Casino in Cass County around 4:21 p.m., traveling eastward for approximately 11.5 miles before dissipating near Gull Lake. The second tornado began west of Merrifield at 4:45 p.m., carving a 10.9-mile path before ending near the Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area. Both tornadoes had estimated peak winds of 100 mph, according to the National Weather Service.
In the aftermath, residents faced extensive tree damage, with numerous roads blocked by fallen limbs. Crow Wing County Sheriff Eric Klang reported that about 2,000 people lost power during the storm. Crews worked diligently to clear debris and restore electricity, with most roads reopened by 7:30 p.m.
Despite the destruction, there were no reports of significant structural damage or injuries. Sheriff Klang remarked, "I think we got lucky on this one."
As cleanup efforts continue, officials urge residents to remain cautious and report any hazards. The community's resilience shines through as neighbors come together to recover from this unexpected event. |
