5 Outdoor Adventures You Can't Miss This June

From mountain biking to kayaking, here's your early summer bucket list

June in the Brainerd Lakes Area is the sweet spot. The bugs haven't quite reached their peak, the trails are dry and firm, the water is warm enough for a swim but still refreshing, and the days are long enough to pack in serious adventure. If you've been waiting all winter to get outside, this is your moment. Here are five outdoor experiences you absolutely shouldn't miss this month.

1. Hit the Cuyuna Mountain Bike Trails

The Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area has earned its reputation as one of the best mountain biking destinations in the Midwest, and June is prime time. The trails drain well after spring rains, the dirt is hero-grippy, and the lush forest canopy provides just enough shade without blocking the sunshine. The Yawkey Unit offers flowy singletrack for beginners and intermediates, while the Mahnomen Unit serves up technical features and challenging climbs for experienced riders. Even if you don't ride, the paved Cuyuna Lakes State Trail is perfect for road biking or a leisurely cruise with the family. Don't miss the overlook at the top of the Portsmouth Mine Pit — the view of the turquoise mine lake is worth the climb.

2. Paddle the Mississippi River Headwaters

Just a short drive north, Itasca State Park marks the official beginning of the Mississippi River. But you don't have to go that far to enjoy a great paddle. The Crow Wing River, which winds through the southern part of our region, offers a quieter, more intimate kayaking experience. Put in at the Crow Wing State Park landing and float downstream through a landscape of hardwood forests, sandy banks, and wildlife-rich wetlands. June water levels are typically perfect — high enough to avoid scraping bottom, calm enough for beginners. Keep your eyes peeled for great blue herons, bald eagles, and the occasional otter.

3. Explore Crow Wing State Park on Foot

Crow Wing State Park is one of Minnesota's hidden gems, and June might be the best month to visit. The park preserves the site of a historic frontier town at the confluence of the Crow Wing and Mississippi Rivers, and the trails wind through a mix of restored prairie, oak savanna, and bottomland forest. Wildflowers are at their peak in early June — look for wild lupine, prairie smoke, and butterfly weed. The Red River Ox Cart Trail segment offers a glimpse into the region's fur trade history, while the Riverside Trail provides peaceful walking along the water. It's a great spot for birdwatching, photography, or just a quiet afternoon picnic.

4. Fish the Early Summer Bite

June is a transitional month for fishing, and that's a good thing. Walleye are moving from their shallow spring spawning areas to deeper summer haunts, which means they're active and feeding aggressively during the change. Early morning and evening are prime times, with crankbaits, spinner rigs, and live bait all producing fish. Northern pike are hitting in the weedlines, bass are moving into their summer patterns, and panfish are still accessible in shallower water. Gull Lake, Pelican Lake, Whitefish Lake, and the Whitefish Chain all offer excellent multi-species opportunities. If you don't have a boat, try the fishing piers at Lum Park in Brainerd or the public accesses with shore-fishing options.

5. Hike the Paul Bunyan State Trail

The Paul Bunyan State Trail is one of Minnesota's longest paved trails, stretching over 100 miles from Brainerd to Bemidji. You don't have to tackle the whole thing — even a few miles make for a fantastic outing. The Brainerd-to-Merrifield segment is particularly scenic in June, passing through forests, wetlands, and open countryside. The trail is flat and well-maintained, making it accessible for walkers, runners, and cyclists of all abilities. Pack a lunch, ride or hike to a scenic spot, and enjoy the peace and quiet of the north woods.

However you choose to get outside this June, the Brainerd Lakes Area has you covered. The only wrong choice is staying inside.
